Religious Education (RE) Curriculum Coverage YEAR 5

Why RE? This subject allows for discussion and exploration of themes that affect everyone and promotes respect, understanding and tolerance of different beliefs and cultures.

Religious Education helps children to:

  • Develop their knowledge and understanding of, and their ability to respond sensitively to, Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain
  • Explore issues within and between faiths to help them understand and respect different religions, beliefs, values and traditions and understand the influence of these on individuals, societies, communities and cultures
  • Consider questions of meaning and purpose in life

Stories of Christianity

 

Taught through ‘Bible Explorer’ – a local Church group come in to teach this interactive exploration of the Christian faith and the main stories told in the Bible.

Christmas Signs and Symbols

 

What represents Christmas and why?

Is the answer to this question the same for everyone?

A look at the Christmas story told in the bible. Also, children will think about the significance of the giving of presents at this time of year.

Islam – The Five Pillars

 

 

A term of work focussing on Islam. Children find out the main themes and beliefs of the religion and answer questions such as:

What do Muslims believe?

What are the 5 pillars of Islam?

Other themes include Allah, the Koran and mosques.

Faith in Our Community

 

 

Children are encouraged to think about their own beliefs as well as those of others in their class/ local community.

Reference is made to religious and non-religious beliefs and children are encouraged to share and discuss their ideas about faith and community.

 

French Curriculum (Modern Foreign Language)

As part of learning French children get the opportunity to;

  • Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
  • Engage in conversations, ask and answer questions, express opinions and respond to those of others, and seek clarification and help
  • Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
  • Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary
  • Write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, expressing their ideas clearly
  • Describe people, places, things and actions in speech and in writing

Getting to know you

A look at greetings and conversations. Hello, goodbye, how are you? Their age and counting from 0-10.

All about me

A look at the colours, everyday actions, classroom instructions, body parts and clothing.

Food Glorious Food

Getting the chance to learn about food, ask for food and discuss preparation and eating.

Family and Friends

Learning about family members, pets, the alphabet, names of people and about your home.

School

This half term the classroom, inside a pencil case, subjects and places inside and around a school environment.

Time

Following on with counting 11-30, days of the week, months of the year, birthdays, important dates and yesterday, today and tomorrow.

All around town

Getting the chance to discuss where you live, in my town, my address and counting in 10’s and 100’s.

Going Shopping

In this half term, the children learn the French vocabulary for fruit, vegetables, clothes, money and role play of shops.

Time

Taking a look at telling the time on a clock and during the day, a TV schedule and learning about the time of school day.

Holidays and Hobbies

Discussing the seasons, the weather forecast and around the world, holidays, sports and hobbies.

On the move

Learning about transport, travelling to school, giving directions and instructions and talking about travel.

Where in the world

In this topic, the children look at where they speak French, the UK, equator, continents and animals in a zoo and around the world.

Getting to know you

Discussing growing up, spelling in French, predicting future events and describing themselves.

Family and Friends

This half term, the children discuss meeting family members, types of homes, describing their house, the farm and animals.

That’s tasty

All about drinks, restaurant times, breakfast, sandwiches, describing food and pizza.

School Life

Finding out about positions within the classroom, objects, subjects, maths lessons and asking questions.

All about ourselves

Continuing to learning about body parts, describing appearance, activities in school, feelings and visiting the doctors.

Time and travelling

Starting the count into thousands, focusing on grammar and ages, when they were born, famous French lives and historical events.

Shopping

Prepping for the French trip with shop conversations, money, shopping lists and overall shopping experience.

All in a day

Looking at the time of day to support their trip, reading a clock and looking at the travel process and school week.

Visiting a French town

Who lives where? What can you do in a town, a town on a map and visiting a home – all in preparation for their trip.

This is France

Final preparation with distances, direction, nationalities, neighbours and Paris.

Using vocabulary learnt throughout school, including greetings and shopping.
