In year 6, all children are given unique spellings each week, based on their individual knowledge and needs. These 10 words should be practised at home and in school, on a daily basis. The children are tested each Friday and new words given. Put simply, if they spell a word correctly in their test, that word is replaced for the following week. If they spell a word incorrectly in the test, they retain that word for the following week to ensure that they do not move on until they are confident in the spelling of that word.
Children will have a 30 minute spelling lesson each Friday, in which they will learn one of the essential English language spelling rules. These lessons will develop their understanding, provide strategies for spelling unknown words and promote a wider vocabulary.
We also promote the use of Spellodrome to improve spelling.
However, the best way to improve spelling is to read widely. Indulge yourself in challenging texts which improve your vocabulary, promote a love of reading and the enhance the consummate power of words.
